THE FIRST BEER IN BARCELONA. SINCE 1856.
The Beginnings
Louis Moritz Trautmann, the company's founder, emigrated to Barcelona fin 1951 from Alsace and by 1856 he was brewing his own beer. Three years later, he bought Joan Maurer’s brewery, located in the “El Raval” District of Barcelona.
In 1864 the company moved to a larger facility outside the city, which eventually included the "Cervecería Moritz" beer-hall. This factory was in use for a century and was closed in 1966 when production moved to another location.
Louis Moritz died in 1920 and the company was passed on to his heirs, who named the business “Fábrica de Cervezas Moritz”. Production was collectivized during the Spanish Civil War, but the factory returned to the family in 1939 and the company became successful because of an increase in beer consumption in Spain.
In 1966, the company bought land for a new factory to meet growing demand and created “Cervezas de Barcelona. With the energy crises that emerged in the 1970s, the company was dissolved in 1978.
In 2004 the descendants of the Moritz family relaunched the brand with much succes and the beer is now produced in Zaragoza. The former factory building from Ronda de Sant Antoni was renovated by Jean Nouvel in 2011 and now houses the company's offices, a beer museum, a small showcase brewery, and a tasting bar. In 2016 they decided to create the Moritz Beer Lab and an experimentation centre.
After 16 years of this relaunch, the Moritz beer is a well known brand in Barcelona. Besides, Moritz is the only type of Spanish beer whose label is entirely written in Catalan.
